City of Memphis Geographic Information System (GIS) Services
The City of Memphis GIS Group is a part of a Memphis area GIS community. As such,
it participates in regional oversight of GIS issues and data sharing. The GIS Group
then incorporates the GIS data into online web-mapping applications and geographic
analyses for the City of Memphis. The group advises city groups on GIS capabilities
and work with contractors to create quality GIS data and mapping software applications.
The GIS Group is also very active in the Memphis Area Geographic Information Council
(MAGIC), working as members, as advocates for GIS technology and as advisors for
government officials and other decision makers.
Who are we?
The Enterprise GIS group at the City of Memphis is a part of Information Services
a Department of the Executive Division and is comprised of the GIS Program Manager,
the GIS Technical Coordinator and the GIS Programmer/Analyst. The Enterprise GIS
group is tasked with the administration, development and the deployment of the Enterprise
GIS capabilities and applications to all city Divisions and the citizens of Memphis.
Della Adams: GIS Program Manager
Della Adams is a graduate of the University of Memphis with a Masters Degree in
Geography with a concentration in GIS Technologies. In her current position as GIS
Program Manager for the City of Memphis, she is responsible for the development
of an Enterprise GIS platform to serve as a central portal for data management and
web-base applications and establishing GIS and GIS related technology policies for
the City. Ms. Adams has over ten years of experience in the technology and GIS sector.
Previously Ms. Adams held positions of various capacities in the technology and
GIS sector including Director, Memphis Technology Council, Director of Technology
Business Development and Director, Data Systems & Information Services. Ms.
Adams is also an Adjunct Instructor at Southwest Tennessee Community College and
has several professional affiliations including Past President/Board of Director
of the Memphis Area Geographic Information Council (MAGIC), Board of Director of
the Greater Memphis YWCA and Board of Director of the Women in Technology of the
Mid-South Chapter.
Nancy Thompson: GIS Technical Coordinator
Ms. Thompson has over 10 years experience and is responsible for maintaining and
monitoring the city’s Enterprise Geo-database and maintaining ArcSDE spatial data.
Other responsibilities include coordinating technical functions for implementing
project or services to serve the various GIS-related needs of the City divisions
and provide training for distributed applications. Ms. Thompson designs web-mapping
tools, creates hard copy map production, captures GIS data, and creates metadata.
Additional duties include preparing presentation maps for meetings, conferences
and other public viewing, also maintaining and applying knowledge of current GIS
technology. Ms. Thompson worked for Ducks Unlimited, Inc as a Remote Sensing/GIS
Analyst where she gained experience with ArcGIS and Image Processing software. She
has worked on international conservation projects before joining the City of Memphis.
She received her Undergraduate (magna cum laude) and Master’s degree in Geography
from the University of Memphis where she was a research assistant for the University
of Memphis GIS Lab and Lab instructor. She was the recipient of an International
Study Abroad Scholarship, the Paul Sisco Scholarship and was a member of the Pi
Kappa Pi Honor Society and the Golden Key Honor Society.
Peter Pace, GISP: GIS Programmer/Analyst
Mr. Pace has over 20 years technical experience in GIS, computer programming and
geographic analyses. He is responsible for working with city departments on their
GIS needs, designing, developing and maintaining web-based mapping tools, making
high-quality maps and technical writing. Mr. Pace holds an undergraduate degree
in Geography (SUNY at Buffalo) and advanced degrees in both Geography (USC) and
Computer Science (Johns Hopkins). He has worked on projects for a number of federal
agencies including NASA (Landsat and the Space Telescope), CIA, Department of Energy
(ORNL) and Department of Defense (Navy). He has taught GIS at the college level
and authored several articles and a chapter on GIS. Mr. Pace is a member of the
Memphis Area Geographic Information Council (MAGIC), a Certified Mapping Scientist
(GIS/LIS) by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and the
former US representative for the Institute for GIS in Education. Personal interests
include epidemiology and cultural geography.
